UNWRAP

Been a while, hasn't it?

That's what happens when you're finishing off end sem assignments, learning all sorts of practical experiments, convincing yourself your internal marks aren't going to be the reason you fail, and then obviously looking for the study material which you always wanted to equip yourself at the start of the semester, but, unfailingly, you didn't. All of the above is followed by those biannual gifts of Exams. 'Phew' is an understatement.
But you know what is not an understatement? The desperate situation in which the writers at Agents of SHIELD (referred to as AoS from hereon) left us all in the mid-season finale. And for those of you who don't follow the show, just think about all those cliffhangers your favorite show has ever left you with. I think I heard a big roar towards those in favor of "Sherlock". Every god damn season, no?

Anyway, what we saw in the AoS mid-finale got me thinking about a certain way we carry ourselves in our lives. After the two days of researching as to how the show would make a return, apart from checking out those never ending chats at the forums, I actually found a very interesting concept: Terrigenesis.

Now, before I delve deeper, a little background story. In the show, Marvel's AoS, during the first half of the second season, both S.H.I.E.L.D. and-their mortal enemies-HYDRA battle for possession of a mysterious obelisk that was found with a 'Kree' corpse during World War II. The 'Kree' is an extraterrestrial humanoid race who have created a vast empire in the Greater Magellanic Cloud and have, on certain occasions, copulated with the beings of Earth. This obelisk is eventually revealed to be called the "Diviner", a Kree artifact that contains a Terrigen crystal. In an aptly named episode, "What They Become", the Diviner is brought to an underground Kree city to be activated. (Spoilers!) It subsequently releases a small burst of Terrigen Mist that causes characters 'Skye' and 'Raina' to undergo Terrigenesis.
Alongwith the terrible loss of Agent Triplett. You're sorely missed, Trip.
So, what is Terrigenesis? Our friends at Wikipedia tell us that "The Terrigen Mist is a natural mutagen, arising as a vapor from the Terrigen Crystals, which are able to alter Inhuman biology." And that, rightly, sounds like every other definition you come across Wiki when you're studying for the exam next day. BORING!
What is really a much more riveting definition is the one our Marvel buddies state, "There's a belief among the Inhumans that Terrigenesis simply reveals who you truly are. That it erases the lie and uncovers the truth." Now that's not something you get in a coursebook, is it?

Revealing your true self. Uncovering the Truth. Discovering your Destiny. Doesn't that sound like something to talk about?
So I did. I spoke about it to people. And I found something very apt we can do on this fateful day of Christmas. Every year, the most awaited time for any child near Christmas is when he/she will get to open their gifts. Open those big boxes and find out what lies inside. Peel off that packaging paper and embrace the love of their relatives(and/or Santa. :P). In short, Unwrap what is in front of them. And you should look at the happiness it gives them. As if the whole world is perfect for those innocent souls.
Similarly, Santa's gift for you grows older annually. That gift, too, is wrapped up somewhere inside. And a bare few of us have had the courage to look within. You see, most of us don't know who we really are. We don't know what we can become. There are so many layers to ourselves, we could easily be overlooked for an onion. Do you really live for yourself? Or is your locus of attention completely external to you? Ask and you shall receive a very wicked answer. Because whether it's internal or external, both need to be peeled off. Agreed, there's no 'Diviner' here to provide you with those Terrigen crystals, but that doesn't mean you can't start looking for them. 'Coz your Terrigenesis may just be waiting for you to take the first step. Even Skye had to go inside the Kree temple/city to get it done. What if you're just not making the effort? What if you're too scared? You know what, you should be. And I'm going to borrow another quote from AoS here and say, "Change is terrifying". But that shouldn't be the reason to stop you. After all, when kids don't fear getting an empty box of gifts, why should you?

Go and take a hard look in the mirror this Christmas. There's a lot of Unwrapping to be done.
