A New Ye--What Again?

So, The 31st is here again. The last day of December, widely anticipated every year, for more than a reason of getting the passport to making complete fools of ourselves and letting our hair down. Obviously that is the main attraction but what about those long words that mean so little when it comes to implementation? Yes, resolutions aren't our favorite things in the world , are they? We make'em, we break'em. Somehow, the longer we take to actually forge our many vows to ourselves, the time taken to finding a "completely exceptional" situation is inversely proportional. Not that we don't plan on continuing after that small "blip" in our arrangement, but the actual element of finally keeping a promise to ourselves is virtually lost & our otherwise quiet brain never fails to keep reminding us this exact point.
Every year, on this very day, most of us try to see how everything is about to change in the coming 24 hours. Spoiler Alert: It's not. The Sun will shine almost as much as it did today. The Earth will rotate exactly how much it does everyday. The day will still be of 24 hours, of which we will waste 12. Nothing changes. Not in a day.

Why then, does everyone hope this year will better than the last? Or for those few lucky enough to have had a great year: Just as equally good enough?  The answer lies in one, very small, very cheesy & very out of our control, word- Hope. It is basically that we always hope for a stroke of luck, a moment of magic or some enchantment which will automatically set everything in place. Okay, for those romantic people out there, yes,  A cupid may also strike you.
Cutting to the essentials, it is, finally, the way we "hope" our next day or "year" to be, is how the outcome will be judged--as unfair or otherwise--by us. The only blind spot in this wonderful convention of ours, is the fact that we never realize how we can actually do much more than judge how the coming day goes. It is our perception how the acts of our environment affect us. We have merely surrendered our powers of fighting, in favor of accepting what comes our way or cribbing why the stroke of misfortune could not have hit our neighbors.

Honestly, why is it a big deal? Why do humans around the world act the way they do, every time our Earth completes an entire orbit? Why do we think that a stroke of the clock will bring about a sea change, every time all stars re-position themselves exactly in the same pattern as they were when we started counting?
Precisely. It's a miracle. And only such absolute genius things by our Creator force us to remember where we are. Agreed, no-one actually thinks about that, but isn't it peculiar; All humans around the world, separated by much more than time-zones, react to a certain change in such a similar way? One might say that such behavior is exhibited during all huge festivals and sorts, but in every corner of the world? No, je ne suis pas d'accord avec vous.
Coming back to a place where gravity still works, the change, my friends, is anything but superficial. The next morning might make you see nothing different outside your house. But, as the saying goes, "Give it time", and you shall see the magic of transition. In a month, there might be someone new moving in. They may or may not have a dog that barks when you sleep. You may or may not find them to be adequately fitting into the description of "Girl/Boy/Transgender Next door". Point is, you will react. That's where it starts.Your reaction is why the world is called the one with "Life". The reaction of every human being is what shapes the change. The catalyst may be of your preference or hatred towards said reaction. And thus, the change occurs, fast or slow. Hence, your year begins. On a high, or otherwise; it's all your work.

So finally, do we have an answer? Well, I do. In the words of Tim Robins from The Shawshank Redemption, "Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.", I would conclude with the fact that there's no shame in having hope people. The New Year is the perfect sign of hope in us. It is the one thing that makes us feel that whatever may happen, however dark the room, Light is waiting for us, 'coz that's where our journey begins, again.  After all, when everything changes, somethings are best left to hope.

  3. I agree with snigdha, it is a good read.
Well written. I think that its not only hope, but its the people's belief, my belief that something good will happen.
